I have been to countless raves and super clubs. the most amazing thing i've seen with photons, was at nocturnal 2001 in havasu. There was a guy who could do figure 8's as well as spin 2 strings into 1. if anyone could explain those things to me please contact me. I have also tried to find string that would be good for photons, but i cant. If anyone knows a good string to use please also contact me.

I think the best and simplest thing is to just use shoe strings. Watch out that the thickness of the string doesn't interfere with the movement and speed of the spin though. Try doing a search of the web for sites on the ancient art of Hawaiian Poi that's how all this got started anyway.

| As far as trick go practice youll get it...but strings...I think you shoul try elastic bands, the effx list for elastic is just longer...bouncing the strings off eachother is fun.It makes checks bounce like no otha.& oh man the variations of the butterfly vary soo much. |

Poi was used by natives of New Zealand (Maoris) as battle training and motivation, but as posted below more on the history can be found on www.homeofpoi.com (nz company/site)

Actually, poi spinning did not begin as an exercise.
The art of swinging Poi began in New Zealand with the Maori people as a way of preparing the food poi. Poi is a food like gluey smooth tapioca, made from the taro root. It was made by cleaning the root and placing it in a small animal-hide bag. The bag was then swung, on a rope, against rocks and trees and the like. This practice gave the women who prepared poi awesome upper body strength, so it was adapted into an exercise for warriors. Warriors began to challenge each other to contests of skill and precision with spinning poi. Somewhere along the line, someone thought, "hey, this would be more challenging, and more a test of courage, if the poi were burning. " eventually, the swinging was introduced to the western world, where it became popular at clubs using glow sticks to simulate fire. Recently many LED glow stick replacements have appeared, including "Beaming Balls"- www.homeofpoi.com, "Electroglow Poi"- www.homeofpoi.com, "Streetlights"- www.neonhusky.com, "Laserbrights" - www.xenoline.com, and "Photon Micro Lights" - www.photonlight.com. Like my friends and I, many poi enthusiasts choose to make their own light sticks. They can be more individual and unique, as well as durable and cheap. The poi attachments should be connected to a string (cable or chain for fire) approximately the length from your shoulder to your mid palm. However, many people change this length based on personal preference. Handles come in two varieties, single loop and double loop. Decide for yourself which is best, but be prepared to use someone else’s grip. Don’t insult anyone’s grip, unless it is dangerous to themselves and their audience.
When swinging, always remember that other people need to be able to move freely, and that poi are dangerous to others. Poi swingers have gotten a bit of a reputation for being surly and apathetic. They have also gained a reputation of only swinging while on ecstasy or at a rave where ecstasy is available. If you aid in the destruction of these myths, the rest of your community will be grateful.

| You can find really good string at a hobby store, they usually have several string types. What you are looking for is a string with a weave this helps with durability, next is size about 1/2-1/3 the thickness of a shoelace, last make sure that the material is soft for your own comfort. There are many types of string out there including some that have reflective material and have found them to be more of a detriment to the show. |
