Two essentials to dancing with lights are as follows:
Speed - Visual effects
Speed is hindered by excesses (thick strings cause drag - heavy objects are harder to move)
Visual effects are what it's all about.
To help with both, here's a quick tip.
Take 1/2 piece of kleenex. (Make it into a square) Roll it into a cylinder. Tape it to the top of your photons. The light will disperse MUCH better and the impact on your body will be neglible.
Rathar than merely having a point of light, you will now have a BAR of light. I've seen people use things like paper, 3x5 index cards, etc etc. These things WORK, but they also hinder the amount of light that flows through. Using as LITTLE kleenex as possible will maximum the visual intensity... trust me...

Would it be the same if photon crystals are used?

Unfortunately, the crystals tend to break. (No one is perfect.) And when they break... they fly and you lose them. And when they hit you, they hurt. And when they hit other people, they look at you with a pissed off face. Hence, there are MANY reasons why I do NOT use the crystals (as neat as they are.) Even gluing the crystals to your photon would not work because under the right circumstances, it'll still break.
Just my thoughts....

yep. the crystals break like woah, easily. maybe if the crystals were made of softer material..
you could even add small cracks into the crystals to make them catch more light..

Hey FierceRaver, Do you only use photons when swinging them from a string? or if you liquid, could you just hold them in your hands? i need some tips on intergrating photons and glowsticks into my raving moves

Trouble is, a softer material won't hold as tight and will come off easier if it gets knocked around. Harder material is more likely to crack or break in an impact. The other problem is that the tighter the crystal is attached to the Rav'n, the more risk there is of damaging the Rav'n itself in an impact if the force is transferred through the crystal to the inside of the light where the bulb is attached to the circuit board. Kind of a catch 22.

There's a really easy way to switch between doing it with your hands and swinging them around..
go to your local Skechers. Every Skechers outlet store has a giant bag of mismatched shoestrings readily available for anyone whom asks. I've found that making a 3 loop noose around the photon's hole (removing the keyrings completely) and just wrapping the string around your hand until you've reached the desired length works great (and allows you to lengthen/shorten the photons DURING YOUR PERFORMANCE by simply extending your index and middle finger allowing them to wrap. (crowds love this). My friend worked on his transition doing this, and now he has routines that rival mine own.

another means of replacing the crystals comes in the form of a tape you can buy at your local Walgreens. see-thru tear-easy gauze tape. clear, but perforated so it catches light almost EXACTLY like the crystals do... but it's unbreakable. you can also make it extend as far from the light as you want, if you wrap it right this is how i do it anyways.
