Here are some thoughts that I recently sent to someone and I thought I'd share them with the group.........
----------------------------------------------
Ordinary shoe strings will work fine. I've been using the same strings for well over a year now and they are very reliable. Thin strings might be nice but thick strings are easier (they won't tangle as much.)
Believe it not, I actually started out with rubber bands (and even those hair tie things that girls use.) They require less energy and you're not limited to just circular patterns as well.
For the "figure eight", (and most simple patterns), I typically keep one thing in mind..... Make them follow each other. Most people have a predominant hand (for me, my right.. for my girlfriend, her left.) Thus, have the predominant side lead and allow the weaker side to follow (once you get better, try switching.. it's.... hard...) Start out by moving your hands in circle (like bicycle pedals.) Become aware of the relative positions of your photons to one another (use glowsticks for the added weight.) Then, try making them spin by keeping your hands close together (very small circles.. maintain the bicycle type thing.) Then, try rolling your wrists over one another (back and forth.) That should yield you a "figure 8." Experimentation and practice are all you need.
My last thought... Don't TRY to do it.. just have fun. Before you know it... it will become second nature to you (just like riding a bike..)
Take care,
